Organisation Description
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1933. IRC works in 28 countries providing relief, protection, and resettlement assistance to refugees and displaced populations. IRC was registered in Uganda in mid-1998 and implements rehabilitation activities in the sectors of Child and Youth Protection and Development, Economic Recovery and Development, Health and Women Protection and Empowerment. IRC Uganda has a head office in Kampala, field offices in Kitgum, Kiryandongo, Moroto, Yumbe, Imvepi, and Kyaka II

The IRC is seeking a Senior Research Officer to be based in Kampala to support the in-country design, development, management and implementation of the research, learning and evidence generating activities for a 30M+ euro five-year, multi-stakeholder urban livelihoods programs implemented in Kampala. He or she will be part of the Re:Build Country project team and the ERD Technical Unit. He or she will directly report to the Regional Research Lead based in Nairobi/Kampala.

Scope of Work
The Re:Build Senior Research Officer in coordination with the Regional Research Lead will play a critical role in the Re:Build project and within the ERD TU and R&I Unit to carry out activities in support of the economic programming research priorities. The Researcher will be specifically responsible for: (i) Coordinating across the various actors involved in the research including in country team, academic partners, donors, and internal departments across IRC; (ii) Provide support with business development activities and managing research projects, and (iii) Support the Lead Researcher in reporting research activities and progress to donors, and internal and external audiences. This position requires strong project management skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills and prior experience working with qualitative & quantitative data

Duties and Responsibilities
• Work closely with research and program teams at headquarters and in field programs to coordinate research studies and ensure research adheres to IRC research standards.
• Assist in data collection training, piloting, and implementation as needed to support data analysis and synthesis efforts under guidance by research team.
• Assist in donor reporting as needed.
• Ensure development and uptake of a dissemination strategy for specific studies.
• Adhere to research standards.
• Ability to take initiative to implement tasks needed within research projects with oversight from the Lead Researcher.
• Work with the Lead Researcher in developing field research protocol, data collection team training and survey implementation.
• Carrying out quantitative and qualitative data analysis of existing secondary data sets as well as qualitative and quantitative data analysis of primary data sets.
• Organizing, designing, and carrying out qualitative fieldwork often with refugees and selected host or vulnerable people in different locations and contexts across the selected divisions of Kampala.
• Leading and conducting qualitative data collection through key informant interviews, focus group discussions, workshops or other methods.
• Carrying out desktop research using a range of methods and sources of data related to the Re:Build Project and refugees related social and economic innovation practice globally.
• Working closely with others as part of a team and with external stakeholders to maintain relationships and deliver work.
• Producing high quality and multifaceted research outputs for a range of audiences including analysis, report writing and presentations where necessary.
• Making sure our work is participatory and involving with stakeholders, clients, government agencies as well as development partners including working with peer researchers and valuing the importance of communicating with different audiences.
• Taking ownership for data and project management and administration as it relates to delivering work.
• Delivery of work strands relating to our research. This will include taking personal responsibility for key elements of work as well as supporting others in the team.
• Working on survey tool development, programming, and implementation.

Qualifications
• University degree and Postgraduate training in Statistics, Social Sciences, Economics, or related field is required.
• Minimum of five years’ experience in research project at a field research management or analyst position.
• Experience with at least two survey programming languages is required.
• Proficiency with Stata and Microsoft Office tools is necessary.
• Experience with handling large data sets.
• Strong writing and communication skills.
• Excellent command of both spoken and written English.
• Excellent management and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to optimally coordinate work ie both on email and phone.
• Flexible, self-motivating and a team player.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain relationships with stakeholders (PI and partner organizations)
• Proven dedication to IRC’s high standards of data quality.
